## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT DEPARTED RUNWAY 01 KRLD, LOST THRUST AT ABOUT 100 FEET AGL. PILOT ATTEMPTED TURN TO LAND ON CROSS RUNWAY, BUT LOST ALTITUDE AND STRUCK RIGHT WINGTIP ON SURFACE DURING TURN, THEN STRUCK GROUND IN A MEDIUM RATE OF DESCENT. AIRCRAFT IS A POWERED (SELF-LAUNCHING) GLIDER, CERTIFICATED AS EXPERIMENTAL/EXHIBITION. PROPELLER IS DRIVEN BY A TWIN BELT SYSTEM, WITH BELT TENSION ADJUSTED BY AN ECCENTRIC MOUNT THAT ALSO ANCHORS PROPELLER HUB. ECCENTRIC IS RETAINED BY A PINCH BOLT SYSTEM. ON ACCIDENT FLIGHT, ECCENTRIC IS BELIEVED TO HAVE SLIPPED, RESULTING IN LOSS OF DRIVE BELT TENSION AND LOSS OF THRUST. THIS DEFICIENCY IS BELIEVED TO BE A RELATIVELY WELL-KNOWN PROBLEM FOR THIS MODEL OF AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA03LA061](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA03LA061), Apr 12, 2003: Avia Stroitel AC-5M (N125MZ), Richland, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain airspeed and the failure of the propeller drive assembly. A factor contributing to the accident was the inadvertent stall.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
