## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRMAN WAS CONDUCTING TAXI TEST ON RWY 33 AT MARION, IN WHEN THE AIRCRAFT BECAME AIRBORNE. THE PILOT SAID HE CAME AROUND TO LAND BUT THE WINDS WERE SO TURBULENT THAT HE COULDN'T LAND. HE HAD NEVER FLOWN THE AIRCRAFT AND HAD NOT FLOWN SINCE 1997, SO HE DECIDED TO GO PRACTICE A LITTLE BEFORE TRYING TO LAND AGAIN. HE TRIED AGAIN AT MARION BUT THE CROSSWIND WAS TOO MUCH FOR HIM TO HANDLE. HE THEN PROCEEDED TO ANDERSON, IN WHERE THE WIND WAS MORE FAVORABLE TO THE NORTH/SOUTH RUNWAY. ON HIS SECOND ATTEMPT, HE LANDED IN THE GRASS ADJACENT TO RUNWAY 36 BUT IN HIS ATTEMPT TO MISS A RUNWAY LIGHT ON A CROSSING RUNWAY HE LOST CONTROL AND GROUND LOOPED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI03LA107](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI03LA107), Apr 12, 2003: McBride Avid Flyer (N29MD), Anderson, IN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's misjudgment of speed which resulted in a landing overrun. The pilot's lack of experience in make and model airplane, and the ditch were contributing factors.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
