## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON MONDAY, APRIL 28, 2003, STEPHAN HEINRICH PERRIN WAS FLYING A PILATUS B4-PC11AF AIRCRAFT (GLIDER) IN THE VICINITY OF THE BERGSETH FIELD AIRPORT (WN76), ENUMCLAW, WA. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LAND THE AIRCRAFT, IT APPEARS THAT MR. PERRIN DID NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT ALTITUDE TO ALIGN THE AIRCRAFT WITH RUNWAY 10. MR. PERRIN LOST POSITIVE CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND FLEW INTO THE TREES ALONG THE SOUTH SIDE OF RUNWAY 10, SEVERELY DAMAGING BOTH WINGS. MR. PERRIN STATED DURING THE INTERVIEW THAT THE NORMAL APPROACH SPEED FOR THE PILATUS B4-PC11AF AIRCRAFT WAS APPROXIMATELY 60 KTS, AND THAT HE NORMALLY FLEW THAT AIRCRAFT ON FINAL APPROACH TO THE RUNWAY AT 50 TO 55 KTS. DURING THIS APPROACH MR. PERRIN STATED BECAUSE HIS APPROACH WAS LOW, HIS AIRSPEED HAD GOTTEN AS LOW AS 40 KTS, BUT WASN'T SURE WHAT THE AIRSPEED WAS AT IMPACT. MR. PERRIN STATED THAT HE DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH LEFT RUDDER TO TURN THE AIRCRAFT. THE METAR FOR KSEA 272256Z 35008KT 10 SM FEW050 SCT200 16/03 A2993. THE METAR FOR KTCM 272255 36010KT 075M FEW040 SCT200 16/02 A2991.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA03LA073](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA03LA073), Apr 27, 2003: Pilatus B4-PC11AF (N159AS), Enumclaw, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control. Contributing factors were the crosswind/tailwind conditions and the trees which the glider impacted.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
