## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON APRIL 27, 2003 THE PILOT IN COMMAND DEPARTED LANTANA AIRPORT IN 51898 FOR A PART 91 LOCAL FLIGHT. AFTER DEPARTING THE PILOT DETERMINED THAT THE VISIBILITY AND CEILING WERE MARGINAL FOR HIS INTENDED FLIGHT. THE PILOT RETURNED TO LANTANA AIRPORT AND ATTEMPTED TO LAND THE AIRCRAFT. HE MADE TWO UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPTS, AND ON THE THIRD ATTEMPT HE LANDED THE AIRCRAFT APPROXIMATELY 1/2 TO 2/3 DOWN THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE AIRCRAFT ONTO THE GRASS, BUT LOST CONTROL, AND THE AIRCRAFT SUBSEQUENTLY COLLIDED WITH BUSHES AND TREES CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA03LA100](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA03LA100), Apr 27, 2003: Cessna 172P (N51898), Lantana, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's use of excessive airspeed and the improper touchdown point during the landing roll, which resulted in the airplane departing the runway, and impacting with trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
