## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE BELL/SHELBY AERO 47-G2 HELICOPTER, N1774, SERIAL NO. SA-52, CRASHED .2 MILES FROM THE END OF RUNWAY 350 AT 1F0 (ARDMORE DOWNTOWN AIRPORT) WHILE MAKING AN EMERGENCY LANDING. THE PIC WAS DANIEL LEE EWING JR., CERTIFICATE #438351536, WHO WAS TAKING AN INSTRUMENT CHECK RIDE WITH THE DPE, MR. NORMAN MARSHALL EDWARDS, CERTIFICATE #002605611. THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED IN AN OPEN FIELD AT A HEADING OF ABOUT 200 DEGREES AND WAS DESTROYED. THE ENGINE AND ROTOR WERE RUNNING WHEN THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED AND FUEL WAS IN THE TANKS. TWO PEOPLE HEARD A RADIO TRANSMISSION FROM THE HELICOPTER BEFORE THE CRASH, AND STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION BY RADIO INDICATED THAT THE HELICOPTER HAD A THROTTLE PROBLEM AND WANTED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING AT 1F0. THE OWNER OF THE HELICOPTER IS VERSATILE HELICOPTERS, INC. ARDMORE, OK. A REVIEW OF THE MAINTENANCE RECORDS INDICATES THAT THE INSPECTIONS REQUIRED BY PART 91 WERE CURRENT AND THE AIRCRAFT HAD 10,234 HOURS TOTAL TIME.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW03FA145](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW03FA145), May 7, 2003: Bell Shelby Aero 47G2 (N1774), Ardmore, OK, destroyed, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to control the rate of descent, which resulted in an improper touchdown of the helicopter. A contributing factor was the loss of throttle control for undetermined reasons.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
