## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AFTER LANDING TAILWHEEL BEGAN TO SHIMMY VIOLENTLY, RESULING IN THE LOSS OF SPRING TENSION, AND THE SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF SPRING CONNECTION (BOTH) TO THE STEERING ARM ASSEMBLY. WITH LOSS OF TAILWHEEL DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AIRCRAFT WEATHERVANED WITH SLIGHT CROSSWIND, AND DEPARTED THE RUNWAY IN A GROUNDLOOP. THE LEFT MAIN GEAR FOLDED UNDER THE AIRCRAFT, ALLOWING THE LEFT WINGTIP AND AILERON TO CONTACT THE RUNWAY, AS WELL AS THE PROPELLER, RESULTING IN A GROUNDSTRIKE. RESULTING DAMAGE INCLUDED A CRACKED LEFT REAR SPAR, AS WELL AS DAMAGE TO THE LEFT AILERON.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA03LA080](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA03LA080), May 9, 2003: Allen SA-300 (N147DA), Yakima, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: Directional control was not maintained during the landing roll. A steering spring disconnected as a result of a tailwheel shimmy was a factor.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
