## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) FEDERAL EXPRESS AIRCRAFT N368FE, DC-10-10/87 SERIAL NUMBER 46606, DEPARTED OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL AT 0602PDT ON 05/24/2003 FOR FLT 3103 ENROUTE TO FORT WORTH, TEXAS. DURING ROTATION, CREW SAW A LARGE SEAGULL, WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY WAS INGESTED INTO THE #3 ENGINE. THE CREW CLIMBED OUT AND COMPLETED CHECKLIST, INFORMING ATC OF THE PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED. NORCAL DEPARTURE CONTROL VECTORED AIRCRAFT OVER THE OCEAN TO DUMP 13,000 POUNDS OF FUEL. ATC PLACED AIRPORT AT ALERT STATUS, AND COMPLETED A FOD CHECK OF RUNWAY 29, WITH NO REMNANTS OF DAMAGE FOUND. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT AT 0737PDT. INSPECTION FROM OAKLAND BASED MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL REVEALED EXCESSIVE DAMAGE TO THE #3 ENGINE DUE TO THE IMPACT OF THE BIRD STRIKE, SUSTAINED VISIBLY TO CONVERGENT INLET FAN BLADES. SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE WAS ALSO INCURRED TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT THRUST REVERSER HALVES, ENGINE NOSE COWL, AND THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR NUMBER 3 TIRE WAS PUNCTURED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
