## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) MR. CROSBY WAS ON A RETURN FLIGHT FROM ELLINGTON AIRPORT IN CT WHEN HE MADE A LOW APPROACH TO HIS LANDING STRIP ON HIS PROPERTY. THE AIRCRAFT PULLED UP AND MADE A BANK TO THE RIGHT AND STRUCK THE TREES. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST IN THE WATER ON THE BANK OF THE STREAM. WHEN FAA INSPECTOR MCCAULEY ARRIVED ON THE SCENE THE AIRCRAFT WAS LOCATED IN A STREAM BANK, NOSE DOWN, AND BURNED BEYOND RECOGNITION. AN EYE WITNESS REPORTED A LOSS OF ENGINE NOISE, THEN THE AIRCRAFT WENT BEHIND THE TREES, HE HEARD THE IMPACT AND SMOKE WAS SEEN COMING FROM THE AREA. ONE OF MR. CROSBY'S FELLOW PILOT FRIENDS WAS ON THE SCENE AND SAID IT WAS MR. CROSBY IN THE AIRCRAFT AND GAVE INSPECTOR MCCAULEY THE "N" NUMBER. THE RIGHT FUEL TANK SHOWED SIGNS OF HEAT DAMAGE WHILE THE LEFT TANK WAS BURNED IN HALF. THE INBOARD SECTION OF THE FUEL TANK WAS COMPLETELY BURNED OFF. THE PROPELLER WAS UNDER WATER AND DID NOT SEEM TO BE BENT. THE THROTTLE AND MIXTURE CONTROLS POSITION COULDN'T BE DETERMINED AT THIS TIME DUE TO THE CONDITION OF THE AIRCRAFT AND ITS POSITION IN THE WATER.
