## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT WAS ON VFR FLIGHT FROM ETC TO HSE, STATED THAT HE SAW AIRPORT AND ENTERED A BASE LEG EVEN THOUGH HE WAS QUITE HIGH AND HAD TO LOSE ALTITUDE. NO RESPONSE WHEN ASKED IF HE HAD CONSIDERED A NORMAL TRAFFIC PATTERN ENTRY AT PATTERN ALTITUDE, HE STATED THAT HE DID NOT CONSIDER SLIPPING AIRCRAFT TO LOSE ALTITUDE, BUT ELECTED TO LOWER FLAPS AND NOSE. OVERSHOOT NORMAL TOUCHDOWN AREA, LOST DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AND EXITED RUNWAY ON LEFT SIDE, STILL HAD 1/3 OF RUNWAY REMAINING AS HE DEPARTED HARD SURFACE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL03LA110](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL03LA110), Jun 21, 2003: Piper PA-28-236 (N9234Z), Hatteras, NC, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll. A factor was a go-around not performed.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
