## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AT ABOUT 1415 CDT ON 7-4-03, PIC MERLYN SCHAFER WAS ATTEMPTING A LANDING ON RUNWAY 36 AT A PRIVATE GRASS STRIP 1.5 MILES NORTH OF WESSINGTON SPRINGS, SD. THE TEMPERATURE WAS 85 DEGREES F AND THERE WAS A LIGHT WEST WIND. THE PILOT TOUCHED DOWN FAR DOWN THE STRIP AND ELECTED TO ATTEMPT A GO-AROUND. THE AIRPLANE STRUCK A FENCE AT THE NORTH END OF THE FIELD. THE AIRPLANE TRAVELED ABOUT 100 YARDS NORTH AND STRUCK A TREE. THE PILOT AND PASSENGER EVACUATED THE AIRPLANE AND WERE NOT INJURED, BUT A POST CRASH FIRE DESTROYED THE AIRPLANE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI03LA197](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI03LA197), Jul 4, 2003: Cessna 175 (N7256M), Wessington Spri, SD, destroyed. Probable cause: The pilot not obtaining/maintaining clearance from the barbed wire fence during the go-around. Factors to the accident were the fence, and the brush.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
