## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT DEPARTED ORIFINO, ID AIRPORT FOR FLIGHT TO MONTANA. PILOT DID NOT FUEL PRIOR TO DEPARTURE BECAUSE NO FUEL WAS AVAILABLE DUE TO HOLIDAY. ENGINE BEGAN LOSING POWER AND PILOT ATTEMPTED TO LAND AT OLD HEADQUARTERS AIRSTRIP AT HEADQUARTERS, IDAHO. FIRST ATTEMPT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL DUE TO EXCESSIVE SPEED AND THE PILOT TRIED TO CIRCLE FOR ANOTHER APPROACH WHEN THE ENGINE QUIT. THE AIRCRAFT PASSED BETWEEN TWO TREES ABOUT 50 FEET IN THE AIR AND SHEARED OFF THE TOPS OF BOTH TREES, TRAVELED ABOUT ANOTHER 200 FEET AND FELL INTO A CLEARING. THERE WAS NO FIRE BECAUSE OF NO FUEL. THE PILOT WAS TAKEN BY HELICOPTER TO LEWISTON HOSPITAL AND RELEASED LATER THE SAME DAY. BOTH PASSENGERS WERE TAKEN TO ORIFINO HOSPITAL AND TREATED AND RELEASED. AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA03LA127](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA03LA127), Jul 4, 2003: Lockheed 402-2 (N3380G), Headquarters, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper preflight planning and improper fuel consumption calculations. Factors contributing to the accident included the unfavorable wind condition, the downdraft, and the trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
