## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JULY 6, 2003, AT APPROXIMATELY 14:03 LOCAL STANDARD TIME, AIRCRAFT N86985, STALLED AND STRUCK THE GROUND IN MANORVILLE, NEW YORK, SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF FROM BROOKHAVEN AIRPORT (KHWV) SHIRLEY, NEW YORK. THE AIRCRAFT OWNER STATED THAT DURING THE BANNER PICKUP AT KHWV THE AIRPLANE WAS SLIGHTLY SLOWER THAN OPTIMUM AIRSPEED. THE OWNER ALSO STATED THAT DUE TO THE BANNER SIZE, IT WAS NECESSARY TO MAKE THE PICKUP UNDER OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE CONDITIONS. THE OWNER OBSERVED THE AIRPLANE AFTER PICKUP AT APPROXIMATELY 250 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND IN A SLOW DESCENT WITH NOSE HIGH ATTITUDE. HE RADIOED THE PILOT TO RELEASE THE BANNER. THE AIRCRAFT WAS STALLED AND THE BANNER WAS RELEASED. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED AND PILOT WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC03LA151](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC03LA151), Jul 6, 2003: Bellanca 8GCBC (N86985), Manorville, NY, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to obtain the proper airspeed and his delayed remedial action to jettison the banner.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
