## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AFTER BEING CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF FROM RUNWAY 25R AT THE DAYTONA BEACH AIRPORT, THE STUDENT, WHO WAS PILOTING N864CP, WAS ATTEMPTING TO GO AROUND ANOTHER AIRCRAFT ON THE TAXIWAY NOVEMBER RUN-UP AREA WHEN HIS LEFT WING STRUCK THE RUDDER AND VERTICAL FIN OF N431ER. THE OTHER AIRCRAFT, N431ER, WAS PARKED TO THE RIGHT OF N864CP, AND WAS NUMBER THREE FOR TAKEOFF. N431ER HAD NOT MOVED FROM ITS RUN-UP SPOT WHEN STRUCK. AFTER STRIKING THE TAIL OF 431ER, 864CP TURNED ABRUPTLY AND ITS PROPELLER CONTACTED THE RIGHT WING OF 431ER. THE RIGHT AILERON, FLAP, AND ASSOCIATED WING STRUCTURE WERE BADLY DAMAGED. THE IMPACT ON THE TAIL CAUSED MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE RUDDER AND VERTICAL FIN. THE DAMAGE TO 864CP WAS LIMITED TO MINOR DAMAGE ON LEFT WING TIP AND MINOR PROPELLER DAMAGE. THE STUDENT PILOT STATED THAT AFTER MAKING A HARD RIGHT HAND TURN TO FACE THE TAXIWAY AND THEN A LEFT TURN TO THE RUNWAY, HE MISJUDGED THE DISTANCE BETWEEN HIS AIRCRAFT AND 431ER AND STRUCK THE TAIL. HE FURTHER STATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT TURNED VERY QUICKLY TO THE LEFT AND STRUCK THE WING OF 431ER BEFORE HE COULD REACT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA03LA144](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA03LA144), Jul 18, 2003: Cessna 172R (N864CP), Daytona Beach, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: Failure of the student pilot of N864CP to judge the clearance between his airplane and the stationary N431ER while taxiing for takeoff which resulted in a ground collision.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
