## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT ATTEMPTED TAKEOFF FROM SHORT GRASS RUNWAY AT MAX GROSS TAKEOFF WEIGHT WITH OBSTACLES AT DEPARTURE END. AIRPLANE STRUCK TREES IN DEPARTURE PATH, AND CRASHED 600 TO 800 FEET BEYOND RUNWAY END. PILOT SELECTED FLAP SETTING OF 10 DEGREES, PER SOFT FIELD TAKEOFF PROCEDURE. AIRCRAFT OWNERS MANUAL RECOMMENDS USE OF NO FLAPS FOR SHORT-FIELD TAKEOFF, BUT DOES NOT GIVE CLEAR DIRECTION ON CHOICE OF FLAP SETTING FOR A SHORT, GRASS RUNWAY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI03LA216](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI03LA216), Jul 18, 2003: Cessna 172H (N1606F), Isle, MN, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain adequate airspeed which resulted in a stall. The trees, high density altitude, and the soft field were additional factors.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
