## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ILIASKA LODGE, A PART 91 OPERATOR, OPERATES THREE DEHAVILLAND BEAVERS (DHC-2). THE LODGE HAD EMPLOYED MR. ROBERT CRAIG JOHNSON FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. HE HAD BEEN FLYING ONE OF THE COMPANIES OTHER DHC-2'S DURING THIS TIME. JUST PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT, IT WAS DECIDED BY JOHNSON AND THE OTHER COMPANY PILOT TO SWITCH AIRCRAFT FOR ONE FLIGHT. THIS WOULD BE JOHNSON'S FIRST FLIGHT IN N930TG. DURING JOHNSON'S TAKEOFF AND CLIMB OUT THE ENGINE FAILED. THE EMERGENCY LANDING WAS HARD, CAUSING STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. JOHNSON STATED HE WAS UNSURE WHY THE ENGINE FAILED. IN A TELEPHONE INTERVIEW WITH THE OTHER COMPANY PILOT, IT WAS LEARNED THAT THE DAY AFTER THE ACCIDENT JOHNSON ADMITTED TO SWITCHING TANKS JUST BEFORE BEGINNING HIS TAKEOFF RUN. JOHNSON ALSO ADMITTED TO THE OTHER COMPANY PILOT THAT HE WAS UNAWARE OF THE DIFFERENT FUEL SELECTOR CONFIGURATIONS OF THE TWO AIRCRAFT AND HAD TURNED THE SELECTOR TO WHAT HE HAD THOUGHT WAS THE CENTER TANK AND WAS ACTUALLY IN THE OFF POSITION. WHEN CONTACTED BY TELEPHONE JOHNSON STATED HE DID NOT KNOW WHY THE ENGINE FAILED. HE ALSO STATED THAT HE WAS UNAWARE OF THE DIFFERENT FUEL SELECTOR CONFIGURATIONS.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
