## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT REPORTED SUDDEN STOPPAGE OF THE ENGINE WITHOUT SPUTTERING AT 1500 FT MSL ALTITUDE WHILE RETURNING TO OPA LOCKA AIRPORT (KOPF) AFTER PLEASURE FLIGHT. ATTEMPTED TO RE-START UNSUCCESSFULLY AND THEN PERFORMED EMERGENCY LANDING APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES NW OF OPA LOCKA WEST AIRPORT (X46) ON THE SAWGRASS. AIRPLANE HAD SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE ON THE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER, ELEVATORS, AND OTHER PARTS OF THE FUSELAGE CAUSED BY THE EMERGENCY LANDING, BUT FORTUNATELY NO INJURIES TO THE OCCUPANTS. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE ENGINE CRANKSHAFT SUSTAINED A METAL FATIGUE CRACK AFT OF #2 CYLINDER CONNECTING ROD AND THE CRANKSHAFT WAS BENT AT THE #1 CYLINDER POSITION. CRANKSHAFT HAS BEEN SENT BY NTSB TO THEIR LABORATORY FOR METALLURGICAL EVALUATION AND AN INVESTIGATION IS CURRENTLY IN PROGRESS TO DETERMINE ITS ORIGIN AND SERVICEABILITY SINCE THE OWNER DOES NOT HAVE THIS INFORMATION IN THE ENGINE MAINTENANCE RECORDS. THE CRANKSHAFT WAS REPLACED ON THIS ENGINE DURING A MAJOR OVERHAUL PERFORMED ON 4/1/97.
