## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT AND ONE PASSENGER WERE TAKING OFF FROM UNIMPROVED TUNDRA DURING A HUNTING TRIP. WIND WAS ESTIMATED BY PILOT AS 90 DEGREES FROM THE RIGHT AT APPROXIMATELY 5 TO 7 MPH. TAKEOFF AREA HAD A SLIGHT DOGLEG TO THE RIGHT TO STAY ON SMOOTHER GROUND. DURING THE TAKEOFF RUN PILOT STATED THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO DRIFT TO THE LEFT SO HE APPLIED RIGHT RUDDER TO COMPENSATE. PILOT SAID HE HEARD A LOUD POP IN LANDING GEAR AREA AND ELECTED TO ABORT TAKE OFF. LEFT HAND GEAR LEG OUTBOARD ATTACHMENT FAILED AND AIRCRAFT VEERED TO LEFT INTO ROUGH TERRAIN FURTHER DAMAGING LEFT WING AND EMPENNAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC03CA097](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC03CA097), Aug 18, 2003: Cessna 170B (N8016A), Sparrevohn, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate compensation for a crosswind, which resulted in collapse of the left main landing gear during the takeoff roll. A factor was the crosswind.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
