## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WHILE RETURNING TO FAIRBANKS FROM A HUNTING CAMP IN THE MANLY HOT SPRINGS (PAML) AREA, THE AIRCRAFT RAN OUT OF FUEL AND THE PIC, MR. SCHMIT ATTEMPTED A LANDING ON A LOGGING ROAD LOCATED 24 MILES SOUTHWEST OF THE FAIRBANKS AREA. MR. SCHMIT WAS UNABLE TO KEEP THE AIRCRAFT ON THE ROAD, AND THE AIRCRAFT EXITED THE ROAD AND RAN INTO SOME TREE STUMPS. THE AIRCRAFT GROUND LOOPED AND CAME TO REST UPSIDE DOWN AND SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE; BOTH PILOT AND PASSENGER WERE UNINJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC03LA103](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC03LA103), Aug 26, 2003: Cessna 180 (N2117Z), Nenana, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to refuel the airplane prior to fuel exhaustion, which resulted in a loss of engine power and a forced landing in unsuitable terrain.

## Other reports on N2117Z (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19910404009129A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910404009129A), Apr 4, 1991: Cessna 180F (N2117Z), Fairbankser, AK, Substantial damage. Engine backfired, lost power. Nosed over landing in deep snow on frozen river. Carburetor bowl drain plug missing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
