## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT LANDED ON MONTAGUE ISLAND, AK WITHIN 1 1/2 HOURS OF HIGH TIDE. THE LANDING SURFACE WAS A DRY SANDY BEACH. APPROXIMATELY 400 FEET INTO THE ROLL OUT THE AIRCRAFT ENCOUNTERED SOFT SAND AND NOSED OVER ONTO ITS BACK. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE USUALLY LANDS CLOSER TO THE WATER BUT CHOSE ANOTHER LANDING SITE ON SHORT FINAL IN ORDER TO AVOID A FLOCK OF BIRDS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC03LA105](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC03LA105), Aug 30, 2003: Cessna 170 (N1293D), Seward, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's selection of unsuitable terrain for landing which resulted in a nose over during the landing roll. A factor contribuiting to the accident was the presence of soft sand.

## Other reports on N1293D (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19980530020359I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19980530020359I), May 30, 1998: Cessna 170A (N1293D), Smyrna, TN, Minor damage. Ground looped during high speed taxi. Exited runway allowing left wing tip to strike the ground.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
