## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) WHILE PRACTICING A RUNNING LANDINGS IN A BH-47 A STUDENT PILOT FAILED TO TOUCH DOWN IN A LEVEL ATTITUDE. THE AIRCRAFT INITIALLY CONTACTED THE SURFACE WITH THE RIGHT REAR SKID CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO PITCH FORWARD. IN REACTION TO THE FORWARD PITCHING MOTION, THE STUDENT PILOT APPLIED EXCESSIVE AFT CYCLIC WHICH CAUSED THE MAIN ROTOR BLADES TO CONTACT THE TAIL BOOM. THE STUDENT PILOT'S FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR STATED THAT HE HAD EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN THE STUDENT PILOT FROM PRACTICING RUNNING LANDINGS WITHOUT AN INSTRUCTOR ON BOARD THE AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

- [NTSB LAX03CA274](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX03CA274), Sep 2, 2003: Bell 47D1 (N64580), Chino, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: the student pilot's inappropriate remedial action through the application of excessive aft cyclic during a run-on landing. A factor in the accident was the student's disregard for company procedures.
