## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 1048 (A/C N454AA) WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED DURING AN EMERGENCY LANDING AT JOHN F. KENNEDY AIRPORT, AFTER THE FLIGHT CREW WAS UNABLE TO EXTEND THE NOSE LANDING GEAR. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED ON THE MAIN GEAR AND THE NOSE WAS LOWERED TO THE RUNWAY AT WHICH TIME THE UNDERSIDE OF THE NOSE INCURRED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. ON SCENE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT A BROKEN SPRAY DEFLECTOR JAMMED THE NOSE GEAR IN THE UP POSITION. FURTHER INVESTIGAITON OF THE SPRAY DEFLECTOR REVEALED EVIDENCE THAT IT HAD BEEN DAMAGED BY THE PUSHBACK TOWBAR. INTERVIEWS WITH MEMBERS OF THE PUSHBACK CREW INDICATED THAT AN INCIDENT HAD OCCURRED DURING THE PUSH.
