## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT STATEMENT: RECEIVED IFR CLEARANCE FROM HRF TO DTS. TAXIED TO ACTIVE-16R-RAN ENGINE UP, ENTERED FLIGHT PLAN INTO GPS. WHILE ENGAGED IN PRE-TAKE-OFF CHECKLIST, I DISTRACTED MYSELF BY PUZZLING OVER A RATHER LENGTHY ROUTING READ BACK W/MULTIPLE CHECK POINTS ALL THE WAY TO RALEIGH DURHAM BEFORE THEN DIRECT DTS. I SHOULD NOT HAVE PERMITTED MYSELF TO BE SO DISTRACTED, BECAUSE I FAILED TO PUT IN TAKE-OFF FLAPS DURING MY PRE-TAKE OFF PROCEDURE. TOLD TOWER I WAS READTY FOR TAKE-OFF, WAITED FOR IFR RELEASE, RECEIVED TO CLEARANCE & PROCEEDED ONTO THE RUNWAY, APPLIED POWER & BEGAN TO ROLL. AT 65 KNOTS I ROTATED NOSE WHEEL; AT 80 KNOTS I APPLIED BACK PRESSURE AT WHICH POINT IT NORMALLY FLIES OFF. THIS TIME IT LIFTED BUT WAS NOT A POSITIVE FLY OFF AS NORMAL. STARTED DRIFTING TO THE RIGHT WHILE STILL IN CONTACT AT TIMES W/THE RUNWAY. I TRIED TO LOWER NOSE SLIGHTLY TO LET IT PITCH UP SPEED. STILL DRIFTING TO THE RIGHT OFF RUNWAY & HIT SOMETHING. AT THAT POINT WE SEEMED TO BE SKIDDING, & I KNEW WE WERE NOT GOING TO MAKE IT (OVER).^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC03CA188](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC03CA188), Sep 2, 2003: Lancair IVP (N789HS), Manassas, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to follow the published takeoff procedures for the make and model airplane and his failure to maintain directional control during takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
