## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON SEPTEMBER 4, 2003 AT 1530 CDT A PIPER J3C-65 OWNED BY DAKOTA AIRSPRAY, INC. AND OPERATED BY CHRISTIAN REIMCHE MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING AFTER POWER LOSS DURING CRUISE FLIGHT. VMC WEATHER CONDITIONS PREVAILED, AND NO FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. THE AIRCRAFT RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AND THE PILOT AND PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED. THE PILOT HOLDS A COMMERCIAL PILOT CERTIFICATE. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED AT THE PILOT'S PRIVATE AIRSTRIP NEAR SUMMIT, SD. FIELD INVESTIGATION OF THE ENGINE BY A LOCAL MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE WOULD RUN. BEFORE THE TEST RUN, WHEN THE FUEL WAS TURNED ON, THE CARBURETOR LEAKED FUEL (THE FLOAT VALVE WAS STUCK).

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI03LA299](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI03LA299), Sep 4, 2003: Piper J3C-65 (N38435), South Shore, SD, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power for undetermined reasons. A factor was the soft terrain encountered during the forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
