## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2003, JOHN GRIEFF, AS PIC OF A CE-172M (N3590Q) ATTEMPTED TO TAKEOFF FROM THE YORK RIVER, NORTH OF YORKTOWN, VIRGINIA. THE TAKEOFF WAS ATTEMPTED AFTER AN HOUR DELAY DUE TO LOCAL WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE PILOT STATED THE TAKEOFF WAS UNEVENTFUL AS THERE WERE ONLY SMALL RIPPLES IN THE WATER IN THE PROTECTED AREA OF THE RIVER. JUST BEFORE LIFT OFF FROM THE SURFACE, A WAVE CAUGHT THE RIGHT REAR FLOAT, CAUSING THE FLOATS TO COLLAPSE. IN ADDITION TO THE FLOATS, THE LEFT DOOR RIGHT HORIZONTAL STABILIZER AND LEFT WINGTIP WERE DAMAGED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
