## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) N56MU, R-22-ALPHA, WHILE DOING HOVER WORK OVER WHISKEY TAXIWAY CAUGHT ITS SKID IN THE HIGH GRASS/DIRT THAT RESULTED IN A DYNAMIC ROLLOVER AT BEDFORD HANSCOM AIRFIELD AT 1228 EDT, 9/28/03. TWO PERSONS ON BOARD WITH NO INJURIES REPORTED. DAMAGE TO AIRCRAFT WAS REPORTED AS SUBSTANTIAL. THE CFI WAS GIVING FLIGHT INSTRUCTION UNDER PART 91 TO A STUDENT WITH APPROXIMATELY 4 HOURS OF HELICOPTER TIME. THE STUDENT PILOT DOES NOT HAVE A MEDICAL OR STUDENT PILOT'S CERTIFICATE. THE STUDENT PILOT WAS HOVERING THE HELICOPTER NEAR THE GROUND WHEN HE UNINTENTIONALLY CONTACTED THE GROUND WHILE MOVING IN A SIDEWAYS MOTION. THIS CAUSED THE HELICOPTER TO HAVE A "DYNAMIC ROLLOVER." THERE WAS SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE HELICOPTER MAST, BLADES, TAIL BOOM, TAIL ROTOR, SKIDS, AND GLASS COCKPIT AREA. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC03CA207](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC03CA207), Sep 28, 2003: Robinson R-22A (N56MU), Bedford, MA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The certified flight instructor's failure to maintain ground clearance and his delayed remedial action, which resulted in a rollover.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
