## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON OCTOBER 7, 2003 AT 1610 EST N540SH, AN EDGE 540 OWNED AND OPERATED BY JONATHAN D. WOOD, PERFORMED A SERIES OF 5 AEROBATIC MANEUVERS WHILE PREPARING FOR AN UPCOMING EVENT. DURING THE FINAL MANEUVER WHICH WAS A KNIFE EDGE SPIN, THE AIRCRAFT WENT INTO A FLAT SPIN STALL. THE PILOT COULD NOT RECOVER AND IMPACTED THE EARTH. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED AND THE PILOTS INJURIES WERE FATAL. THE PILOT HELD A COMMERCIAL CERTIFICATE (ASEL AND AMEL). VFR FLIGHT CONDITIONS PREVAILED AND NO FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. THE FLIGHT ORIINATED FROM WARRENTON-FAUQUIER AIRPORT AND REMAINED INSIDE THE AEROBATIC BOX.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC04LA004](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC04LA004), Oct 7, 2003: Pfeifler Edge-540 (N540SH), Warrenton, VA, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain aircraft control while performing aerobatic maneuvers.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
