## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON OCTOBER 9, 2003 AT 1730 EST N9271H, A HOWARD DGA-15-P OWNED BY GATORCOR INC. AND OPERATED BY ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, WAS ON FINAL APPROACH AT CAPTAIN DUKE REGIONAL AIRPORT, ST. MARYS, MD. THE AIRCRAFT MADE A NORMAL FULL FLAP APPROACH AND IN THE FLARE, BEGAN TO DRIFT LEFT TOWARDS THE EAST SIDE OF THE RUNWAY 11. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED A GO-AROUND WITH THE FLAPS IN THE FULL DOWN POSITION. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO DRIFT TOWARDS THE AIRPORT PERIMETER FENCE AND THE LEFT WING MADE CONTACT WITH THE FENCE. THIS SPUN THE AIRCRAFT 90 DEGREES COUNTER CLOCKWISE AWAY FROM THE RUNWAY. THE RIGHT WING THEN IMPACTED THREE POLES AND A 4 INCH MAIN GATE POLE. THIS IMPACT CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO SPIN CLOCKWISE AND THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST ABOUT 20 DEGREES SHORT OF SITTING 90 DEGREES OFF OF THE RUNWAY HEADING WITH ITS NOSE EMBEDDED IN THE GROUND AND TAIL POINTING UP IN THE AIR. THE AIRCRAFT HAD SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT WINGS. THE ENGINE, LEFT ELEVATOR HORN, FUSELAGE FABRIC, LANDING GEAR, AND WIND SUPPORT STRUT RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AS WELL. THE PILOT HOLDS A COMMERCIAL CERTIFICATE (ASEL). VFR FLIGHT CONDITIONS PREVAILED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC04CA005](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC04CA005), Oct 9, 2003: Howard DGA-15P (N9271H), Leonardtown, MD, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during an aborted landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
