## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON OCTOBER 22, 2003 AN ON-SCENE INVESTIGATION, ALONG WITH A PILOT INTERVIEW DETERMINED THE FOLLOWING NARRATIVE STATEMENT. THE PILOT WAS COMPLETING A LESSON PLAN SET FORTH IN HIS FAR 141 CURRICULUM. THIS LESSON PLAN CONSISTED OF A NIGHT CROSS COUNTRY. HE DEPARTED MURFREESBORO, TN (MBT) AT APPROXIMATELY 7:45CST ENROUTE TO A THREE LEG CROSS-COUNTRY. AT EACH OF THESE AIRPORTS THE PILOT STATED HE WAS PRACTICING STRAIGHT IN APPROACHES. THIS STRAIGHT IN APPROACH INCLUDES THE ACCIDENT AIRPORT. THE PILOT STATED ON FINAL APPROACH TO 36 HE WAS AT 65 KNOTS, HE TOUCHED DOWN APPROXIMATELY 300 TO 500 FEET FROM THRESHOLD AND WAS ABOUT ONE FOOT OFF THE RUNWAY UNTIL THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN LEFT MAIN FIRST AND HE LOST CONTROL AT THE APPROACH END OF 18. (RUNWAY LENGTH 3898' AT 615') THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A RUNWAY MARKER AND VEERED OFF THE WEST SIDE OF THE RUNWAY SHEARING THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR. NO INJURIES TO THE PILOT NOTED. THE AIRCRAFT DAMAGE CONSISTED OF RIGHT WING OUTBOARD FROM THE ATTACH POINT OF THE AILERON EXTENDING FORWARD APPROXIMATELY 6 INCHES. THE AILERON PUSH PULL TUBE ATTACHMENT WAS PULLED AWAY FROM THE AILERON ITSELF. THE RIGHT FLAP WAS IN THE LANDING POSITION AND WAS SKINNED ON THE TRAILING EDGE. THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR WAS SHEARED AWAY, THIS CAUSED A FRACTURING OF THE GRAPHITE BLOCK AND THE ATTACHMENT. THE FUSELAGE UNDER THE RIGHT SEAT HAD TEAR APPROXIMATELY 9 INCHES RUNNING FORE AND AFT. THE REAR OF THE FUSELAGE IN WHICH A SKID PLATE IS ATTACHED, SHOWED EVIDENCE THAT THE AIRCRAFT SLID ON ITS TAIL AND DISLODGED THE SKID PLATE ITSELF. THE PROPELLER SHOWED SIGNS OF A BLADE STRIKE ON THE UPWARD SWING. THE FOUR INCHES OF THE TIP WAS TORN AND SHREDDED. (WOOD COMPOSITE PROPELLER) THE ELT DID NOT ACTIVATE. AIRCRAFT WAS MOVED TO THE OWNER'S HANGAR. (MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY)

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL04LA022](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL04LA022), Oct 22, 2003: Diamond DA 20-C1 (N575MT), Murfreesboro, TN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to attain adequate airspeed, which resulted in a stall mush and collision with a taxiway sign. A factor was the pilot's delay in aborting the landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
