## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON OCTOBER 26, 2003, AT 1419 PACIFIC STANDARD TIME, A MOONEY M20K AIRPLANE, N1147N, CRASH-LANDED STATE HIGHWAY 163, APPROXIMATELY 500 FEET WEST OF MONTGOMERY FIELD, (MYF) IN SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA. A HEAVY SMOKE LAYER CAUSED BY FOREST FIRES BURNING IN THE AREA RESULTED IN RESTRICTED VISIBILITY, A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO THE ACCIDENT. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO LAND, BUT WAS TOO HIGH AND WAS FLYING TOO FAST. AS HE TOUCHED DOWN ON THE RUNWAY HE REALIZED HE HAD LANDED LONG. WITH A CHAIN LINK FENCE RAPIDLY APPROACHING, HE APPLIED FULL POWER AND RAISED THE FLAPS AND ATTEMPTED TO CLIMB. THE AIRCRAFT STALLED, THE PILOT TURNED LEFT (SOUTH) AND CRASH LANDED ON HIGHWAY 163 HITTING THE NORTH BOUND LANE. THE R/H WING SHEARED OFF AS THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE CONCRETE CENTER DIVIDER. THE AIRCRAFT BURST INTO FLAMES AND WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THE PILOT RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

Probable cause: the pilot's failure to configure the airplane properly for the go-around which resulted in degraded climb performance, and his failure to maintain adequate airspeed which resulted in a stall.
