## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 11/07/03 AT 1515 LOCAL TIME N102RC, AN AMATEUR BUILT RV-6A CRASHED IN THE SANTA CLARA RIVER BOTTOM 1 MILE EAST OF SATICOY CA KILLING THE PILOT RUSS CATHAWAY. INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE AIRCRAFT FUEL TANKS HAD VERY LITTLE IF ANY FUEL IN THEM. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE ENGINE FUEL INLET LINE TO THE CARBURETOR HAD BEEN LEFT LOOSE CAUSING FUEL TO BE PUMPED INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THIS ULTIMATELY LED TO FUEL EXHAUSTION AND THE SUBSEQUENT EMERGENCY LANDING ATTEMPT IN THE RIVER BOTTOM. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX04LA038](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX04LA038), Nov 7, 2003: Cathaway RV-6A (N102RC), Saticoy, CA, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion as a result of a loose B-nut fitting for the carburetor fuel inlet line, which allowed fuel to leak out.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
