## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ACE AIR 43 WAS EXECUTING THE LDA-2 RWY 8 APPROACH INTO JUNEAU, AK. AT APPROXIMATELY 0615 LOCAL. WHILE ON THE APPROACH APPROXIMATELY 1.1 MILES FROM THE AIRPORT, ACE AIR 43 STRUCK A TREE. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE BUT WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE FLYING TO THE AIRPORT, AND LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THE LDA-2 RNWY 8 APPROACH UTILIZES A "FLY VISUAL" LEG 3.2 MILES FROM THE MISSED APPROACH POINT TO THE RUNWAY, WITH A HEADING GIVEN AS 063 DEGREES. SEQUENCED, STROBED, LEAD-IN LIGHTS ARE LOCATED ALONG THE ROUTE TO ASSIST THE PILOTS IN COURSE ALIGNMENT. THE TREE THAT ACE AIR 43 COLLIDED WITH WAS .243 MILES NORTH OF THESE LIGHTS, IN AN AREA OF RISING TERRAIN. THE VISIBILITY AT JUNEAU HAD BEEN BELOW MINIMUMS AS ACE AIR 43 APPROACHED THE AREA, INCREASING TO THE LEGAL MINIMUMS (2 MILES) JUST BEFORE THEY BEGAN THE APPROACH. THE CEILING WAS 800 INDEFINITE, WHICH IS 200FT BELOW THE MDA. IT WAS DARK AND SNOWING. ALTHOUGH THE PILOTS STATED THAT VISIBILITY/CEILING DID NOT HINDER THEIR ABILITY TO EXECUTE THE APPROACH SAFELY, THEY CAN GIVE NO REASON WHY THEY HIT THE TREE. THE AIRCRAFT WAS LEFT OF THE VISUAL COURSE, AND 200-300 FT BELOW THE VASI GLIDESLOPE WHEN IT STRUCK THE TREE.
