## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON DECEMBER 13, 2003 APPROXIMATELY 1000 MST, A MAULE M-4, REGISTERED TO AND OPERATED BY THE PILOT, WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED WHEN IT VEERED OFF THE LANDING STRIP AND NOSED OVER DURING A LANDING AT THE FLYING LAZY D AIRSTRIP LOCATED 2 MILES SOUTH OF ELBERT COLORADO. THE PRIVATE PILOT AND HIS PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AND NO FLIGHT PLAN HAD BEEN FILED. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED AT CALAH COLORADO APPROXIMATELY 0930 MST. THE PILOT HAD RECEIVED AN ENDORSEMENT TO FLY TAIL DRAGGER AIRCRAFT THE WEEK PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. HE AND HIS WIFE HAD FLOWN TO CALHAN COLORADO TO REFUEL THE AIRCRAFT AND WERE RETURNING TO THE FLYING LAZY D WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, HE LANDED FROM THE NORTH ON THE DIRT RUNWAY AND WAS ON ROLLOUT APPROXIMATELY 300 FEET DOWN THE RUNWAY, READY TO APPLY POWER TO TAXI TO THE HANGAR WHEN THE AIRCRAFT VEERED TO THE LEFT OF THE RUNWAY. THE LEFT WHEEL HIT A BERM AND THE RIGHT WING DIPPED CLOSE TO THE GROUND. HE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF CORRECTING THIS WHEN THE RIGHT GEAR HIT THE BERM AND THE LEFT WING HIT THE GROUND, DAMAGING THE WING TIP. THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED ABOUT ANOTHER 30-50 FEET OVER VERY ROUGH TERRAIN AND BOTH GEAR HIT A CREVASSES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DEN04LA029](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DEN04LA029), Dec 13, 2003: Maule M-4-210 (N4621T), Elbert, CO, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's failure to maintain directional control of the airplane. A contributing factor was his inexperience in aircraft type.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
