## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING A FLIGHT FROM ADDISON, TEXAS (ADS) TO AMARILLO, TEXAS (TDW), SMOKE APPEARED IN THE COCKPIT. AIRCRAFT WAS MADE READY FOR AN EMERGENCY LANDING FOR AN INFLIGHT ENGINE FIRE. THE FUEL SELECTOR WAS TURNED TO THE OFF POSITION, PROPELLER WAS POSITIONED FOR EMERGENCY LANDING, 20 DEGREES OF FLAPS WAS SET, AND A GLIDE WAS ESTABLISHED. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO LAND ON TEXAS FM 2162 APPROXIMATELY 4.5 MILES SOUTHWEST OF CLARENDON, TEXAS. INITIAL TOUCHDOWN OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET WEST OF THE COUNTY ROAD. THE AIRCRAFT MADE A LANDING AT BEARING 068.5 DEGREES, STRUCK A TREE WITH THE LEFT WING, WENT THROUGH A FENCE, AND CAME TO REST SOME 3 FEET FROM THE EDGE OF TEXAS FM 2162, AND SOME 166 FEET FROM INITIAL POINT OF CONTACT WITH THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST POINTING A BEARING OF 173.7 DEGREES BECAUSE OF THE LEFT WING STRIKING A TREE. DURING INVESTIGATION OF THE ACCIDENT, THE COWLING WAS REMOVED BY REPRESENTATIVES FROM CESSNA AIRCRAFT COMPANY AND TELEDYNE CONTINENTAL MOTORS. THE NUMBER 6 ENGINE CYLINDER WAS NOTED TO HAVE 6 OUT OF 8 STUDS BROKEN, AND PARTIALLY SEPARATED FROM THE ENGINE CRANKCASE. THERE WERE SIGNS OF EXTREME HEAT DAMAGE TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE COWLING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW04LA042](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW04LA042), Dec 14, 2003: Cessna 210 (N718LG), Clarendon, TX, destroyed. Probable cause: the loss of engine power due the separation of the number six cylinder as a result of a fatigue failure from the loosening of the cylinder attachment hardware.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
