## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) UAL 1521 REPORTED A MECHANICAL PROBLEM 20 MILES SOUTH WEST OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA. AT 2245Z, THE CREW REQUESTED AN EMERGENCY LANDING AT INDIANAPOLIS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. AT 2246Z, THE CREW REPORTED SMOKE IN THE CABIN. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED AT INDIANAPOLIS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AT 2302Z WITHOUT NO INCIDENTS. MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL INSPECTED THE E&E COMPARTMENT AND FOUND THE STATIC INVERTER EXTREMELY HOT AND EMANATING A STRONG ELECTRICAL BURN. MAINTENANCE REPLACED THE COMPONENT WITH A SERVICEABLE STATIC INVERTER. THE NTSB HAS REQUESTED AN EXAMINATION OF THE STATIC INVERTER DUE TO A SERIES OF ISSUES WITH STATIC INVERTERS FAULT PROTECTION. THE AIRCRAFT WAS RELEASED ON 12/15/2003.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
