## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AN AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT #349, MD-80, DEPARTING O'HARE AIRPORT ON RUNWAY 32L AT 210255Z, THE ATCS OBSERVED FIRE AND DEBRIS FROM THE NUMBER TWO ENGINE AND ADVISED THE PILOT. THE PILOT DECLARED AN EMERGENCY (WAS GIVEN THE OPTION TO LAND ANY RUNWAY), RETURNED AND LANDED ON RUNWAY 22R AT 210259Z, WITHOUT INCIDENT AND STOPPED ON RUNWAY. ARFF MET THE AIRCRAFT AS IT CAME TO A STOP. THEY INSPECTED THE DAMAGED ENGINE, FOUND THE INTERIOR TO BE STILL GLOWING, THEY THEN HAD THE COCKPIT CREW DISCHARGE BOTH FIRE EXTINGUISHERS. THAT ACTION EXTINGUISHED ALL REMNANTS OF THE INTERNAL FIRE. RUNWAYS 22R AND 27R WERE CLOSED AND RUNWAY 32L WAS INSPECTED, NO DEBRIS FOUND. AFTER AALA MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL INSPECTED THE AIRCRAFT, IT WAS ALLOWED TO TAXI TO THE GATE AT 210330Z, AFTER WHICH THE PASSENGERS DEPLANED NORMALLY. THERE WERE NO REPORTED INJURIES. THE AIRCRAFT WAS REMOVED FROM SERVICE AND SENT TO THE HANGAR FOR EVALUATION AND CORRECTIVE ACTION. ON SITE INSPECTION REVEALED THE TURBINE STATOR AND ROTOR ASSEMBLIES APPEARED TO HAVE DISINTEGRATED BUT DID NOT PENETRATE THE OUTER TURBINE CASE OR ENGINE COWLING.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
