## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT WAS FLYING ENROUTE FROM MARANA AIRPORT (AVQ) TO CASA GRANDE (CGZ) GIVING A STUDENT A FAM. RIDE. THE ENGINE BLEW UP SHORT OF THE RUNWAY AT CASA GRANDE. THE INSTRUCTOR SET THE AIRCRAFT DOWN SHORT OF THE RUNWAY, SUSTAINING NO DAMAGE OR INJURIES. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE #1 CONNECTING ROD BEARING HAD SPUN AND BLOCKED OIL PRESSURE TO THE BEARING. THE ROD LET GO OF THE CRANK AND CAUSED THE #2 CONNECTING ROD TO LET GO AND COME THRU THE TOP OF THE CASE. THE ENGINE HAD 1500 HOURS ON IT SINCE A MAJOR OVERHAUL. SUSPECT THAT THE BEARING ROD HAD WORN ENOUGH TO ALLOW IT TO SPIN.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
