## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT WAS EQUIPPED WITH SKIS AND WAS MAKING TOUCH AND GO LANDINGS ON A FROZEN LAKE NEAR MCCALL, IDAHO. ON THE THIRD TOUCH AND GO, THE PILOT NOTICED ONE OF THE SAFETY CABLES THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO SECURE THE RIGHT SKI HAD BROKEN. THIS ALLOWED THE RIGHT SKI TO RIDE UP IN A NOSE HIGH POSITION DURING FLIGHT. THE SKI WAS POINTING UP INSTEAD OF LEVEL. WHEN THE PILOT LANDED THE AIRCRAFT, THE SKIS NOSED INTO THE SLUSH THAT WAS COVERING THE ICE AND THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPED OVER ONTO IT'S BACK. DAMAGE OCCURRED TO THE TOP OF THE WINGS AND THE TAIL WHEN IT CAME TO REST UPSIDE DOWN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA04LA039](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA04LA039), Feb 8, 2004: Piper PA-18-150 (N5753Z), McCall, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The failure of the right rear ski cable and the owner's improper substitution of the right rear ski cable with an unapproved ski cable. A factor was the slushy snow.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
