## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT ENROUTE FROM SANTA BARBARA TO LOMPOC IN EXPERIMENTAL AMATEUR BUILT AIRCRAFT. ENGINE (SUBARU) QUIT AT 3000 FEET OVER THE GAVIOTA PASS. PILOT ATTEMPTED TO LAND ON HARD SURFACE ROAD BUT CAUGHT WINGTIP ON HILLSIDE. AIRCRAFT SPUN 90 DEGREES AND CAME TO REST BESIDE ROAD. PILOT HIT TEETH ON INSTRUMENT PANEL BUT ONLY BRUISED, NOT BROKEN. AIRCRAFT DAMAGE SUBSTANTIAL. COULD NOT DETERMINE WHY ENGINE QUIT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX04LA141](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX04LA141), Feb 29, 2004: Vogt KR2S (N4027Y), Lompoc, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: a failure of the fuel pump, which induced a total loss of engine power.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
