## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT WAS ATTEMPTING TO LAND ON A PRIVATE AIRFIELD NEAR PLAINS, GEORGIA. THE GRASS AIRFIELD IS NOT LISTED ON THE SECTIONAL FOR THE AREA. THE OWNER OF THE AIRFIELD, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ STATED THAT THE LENGTH OF THE LANDING AREA WAS 2200 FEET. THE PILOT LANDING MORE THAN HALFWAY DOWN THE RUNWAY WITH A TAIL WIND APPROXIMATELY 8 KNOTS. ONCE ON THE GROUND THE PILOT REALIZED THAT HE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO STOP THE AIRCRAFT BEFORE REACHING THE TREE LINE AT THE END. THE TREES AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY WERE ABOUT 50 TO 75 FEET TALL. THE PILOT THEN DECIDED TO REMAIN ON THE GROUND AND ATTEMPT TO GROUND LOOP HIS AIRPLANE BEFORE REACHING THE TREE LINE. HE WAS NOT ABLE TO DO SO AND IMPACTED THE TREES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL04LA084](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL04LA084), Mar 13, 2004: Maule MX-7-180A (N3179U), Plains, GA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's misjudgment of the speed/distance/altitude which resulted in a overrun of the runway.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
