## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE AIRPLANE WAS MANEUVERING FOR A THREE-MILE FINAL APPROACH TO RUNWAY 36 AT JOPLIN, WHEN THE ENGINE FAILED. THE PILOT SAID IT SEEMED TO BE FUEL STARVATION, SINCE HE COULD NOT RESTART IT. EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE REVEALED NOTHING THAT WOULD PREVENT IT FROM RUNNING. THERE WAS NO FUEL IN THE INJECTION SYSTEM DOWNSTREAM OF THE FUEL PUMP. THE PUMP WAS OPERATIONAL, FUEL WAS AVAILABLE IN ALL THE TANKS, AND THE SELECTOR WAS ON THE MAIN TANK. THE PILOT ELECTED TO LAND ON A HIGHWAY, BUT WAS FORCED TO MAKE A DOWNWIND APPROACH DUE TO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC. THE AIRCRAFT STALLED AS THE PILOT MANEUVERED TO AVOID A CAR, AND A HARD LANDING BROKE OFF THE LEFT MAIN GEAR, AND COLLAPSED THE NOSE GEAR. ENGINE LOST POWER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI04LA098](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI04LA098), Apr 3, 2004: Navion B (N5223K), Joplin, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: The loss of engine power for undetermined reasons. The posts, unsuitable terrain and signs were factors to the accident.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
