## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON APRIL 15, 2004, EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT N82LS DEPARTED ON RUNWAY 21 IN BORGER, TEXAS, (BGD) AT APPROXIMATELY 16:15 HOURS, CDT. AFTER REACHING PATTERN ALTITUDE THE ENGINE EXPERIENCED HIGH OIL TEMPERATURE INDICATIONS ALONG WITH DIMINISHED RPM. THE PILOT INITIATED A LEFT CROSSWIND, THEN INITIATED A DOWNWIND LEG IN THE PATTERN BUT THE ENGINE WAS NOT PRODUCING SUFFICIENT RPM TO MAINTAIN ALTITUDE. THE PILOT TURNED BASE LEG AND THEN SHORT FINAL TO RUNWAY 21. THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE SLOPING TERRAIN APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET FROM THE THRESHOLD OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT NOSED OVER, SLID FOR APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET, AND CAME TO REST INVERTED AT THE THRESHOLD OF RUNWAY 21. THERE WAS NO INJURY TO THE SINGLE OCCUPANT; HOWEVER, THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WING, VERTICAL STABILIZER, RUDDER, FUSELAGE, PROPELLER, AND CANOPY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW04LA109](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW04LA109), Apr 15, 2004: Spannagel RV-8A (N82LS), Borger, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: A partial loss of engine power as a result of inadequate clearance between the journals and bearings.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
