## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) INTERVIEWED PILOT/OWNER BY TELEPHONE. PILOT INDICATES HE WAS PERFORMING FLY-BY OVER THE BYRON CA RUNWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 130 KNOTS, WHEN HE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN AND IMMEDIATE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. PILOT STATES HE HAD SUFFICIENT ENERGY IN THE AIRPLANE TO EXECUTE AN IMMEDIATE 180 DEGREE TURN RETURN TO A DOWNWIND RUNWAY APPROACH. THE LANDING WAS EXECUTED WITHOUT EVENT, OTHER THAN STRIKING THE GROUND HARD. RESULTING DAMAGE WAS A BENT TAILWHEEL AXLE, A CRACK TO THE R/H CANARD. MR RUTLEDGE INDICATED HIS VIEW THAT THE SUDDENESS OF THE ENGINE STOPPAGE GIVES HIM CAUSE TO WONDER WHETHER HIS ENGINE FUEL PUMP FAILED. PILOT FURTHER INDICATES IN HINDSIGHT, HE WOULD HAVE ATTEMPTED TO TURN ON HIS ELECTRIC AUX FUEL PUMP, HOWEVER, TIME AND A LACK OF ALTITUDE DID NOT AFFORD HIM THE LUXURY OF THINKING THAT FAR AHEAD. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE "QUICKIE" MEMBERS OF THE LIVERMORE EAA CHAPTER, AND WILL ADVISE THIS OFFICE OF THE RESULTS OF THEIR INVESTIGATION OF THE EVENT. THIS AIRCRAFT IS POWERED BY A MODIFIED CONTINENTAL O-200 ENGINE.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
