## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON MAY 9, 2004, MR. JOHN M. NASH, HOLDER OF AN ATP CERTIFICATE, CRASH-LANDED N308KF, AN AMATEUR-BUILT KITFOX II, 3 MILES NORTH OF BROADVIEW, MONTANA. THE AIRCRAFT RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AND THE PILOT (SOLE OCCUPANT) RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES. ACCORDING TO MR. NASH, HE WAS FLYING APPROXIMATELY 1,000 FEET AGL WHEN THE ENGINE QUIT. PILOT WAS ABLE TO RESTART ENGINE FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS BEFORE IT AGAIN QUIT. AIRCRAFT WAS TRAVELING DOWNWIND DURING THE LANDING ATTEMPT (15-25 KSTS GUSTING). MR NASH INDICATED THAT HE HAD A 1 MILE AREA IN A MOUNTAINOUS AREA TO PICK A FIELD TO LAND IN. AT APPROXIMATELY 50 FEET AGL, AIRCRAFT STALLED AND NOSED OVER APPROXIMATELY 30 DEGREES IMPACTING THE GROUND. AIRCRAFT THEN FLIPPED OVER. INVESTIGATION COULD NOT FIND CAUSE OF ENGINE FAILURE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA04LA080](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA04LA080), May 9, 2004: 2003 Nash Kitfox II (N308KF), Broadview, MT, substantial damage. Probable cause: Fuel starvation during cruise flight for undetermined reasons. Unsuitable terrain for a forced landing was a factor.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
