(-23) ON MAY 12, 2004 GARY MATTHYS WAS PIC OF N2301F (ROBINSON R-22 BETA II HELICOPTER) AT APPROXIMATELY 700 FEET AGL NEAR WINSTED, MN WHEN HE HEARD A LOUD SNAP, THEN SMELLED BURNING RUBBER AND THE CLUTCH LIGHT ILLUMINATED. MR. MATHYS ASSUMED HE WAS LOSING AND/OR HAD LOST THE DRIVE BELTS. HE IMMEDIATELY INITIATED AN AUTOROTATION AND IMPACTED THE GROUND DESTROYING THE AIRCRAFT. MR. MATHYS SUSTAINED NO SERIOUS INJURIES. UPON INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT IT IS SUSPECTED THAT ONE OF THE V-BELTS FAILED CAUSING BOTH V-BELTS TO COME OFF THE SHEAVES FORCING MR. MATHYS TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING.
