## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON MAY 19, 2004, WHILE ENROUTE FROM BUFFALO AIRPORT (1E7) TO PLAINVIEW (PVW), TEXAS, ON A VFR CROSS COUNTRY INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT CRUISING AT 5500 FEET MSL, BEECH MUSKETEER N6943Q LOST POWER AT APPROXIMATELY 1920 CDT, DUE TO SEPARATION OF THE PROPELLER FROM THE AIRCRAFT. AIRCRAFT WAS APPROXIMATELY ONE MILE SOUTH AND LESS THAN ONE MILE WEST OF VAUGHN AIRPORT (29F) AND 13.95 MILES NORTH OF PVW. THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR STATED THAT OIL WAS OBSERVED ON THE WINDSHIELD JUST PRIOR TO SEPARATION OF THE PROPELLER FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THE DEPARTURE OF THE PROPELLER WAS OBSERVED BY THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR, STATING THAT IT DEPARTED TO THE RIGHT OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE ENGINE THEN OVERSPED TO APPROXIMATELY 3500 RPM AND JUST AS THE INSTRUCTOR WAS REACHING FOR THE THROTTLE TO IDLE BACK, THE ENGINE QUIT. AT APPROXIMATELY 5000 FEET MSL, THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR INITIATED A DEAD STICK LANDING INTO 29F. THE INSTRUCTOR TURNED THE AIRCRAFT EAST AND THEN ENTERED A DOWNWIND LEG FOR RUNWAY 17. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT WITH NO DAMAGE OTHER THAN THE BROKEN CRANKSHAFT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR OR THE STUDENT PILOT. EXAMINATION OF THE CRANKSHAFT REVEALED FAILURE AFT OF THE PROPELLERFLANGE. THE PROPELLER WAS NOT FOUND.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW04IA134](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW04IA134), May 20, 2004: Beech A23A (N6943Q), Kress, TX, incident, minor damage. Probable cause: The in-flight separation of the crankshaft for undetermined reasons.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
