## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT STATED THAT HE WAS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH A NEW ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEM IN HIS AIRCRAFT. A NEW CONTROL UNIT AND MAGNITOS WERE INSTALLED AND TESTED GOOD. ON THE DAY OF FLIGHT THE SYSTEM CHECKED NORMAL DURING THE PREFLIGHT AND ELECTED TO FLY THE AIRPLANE IN THE PATTERN FOR A REVIEW. TAKE-OFF AND PATTERN WAS NORMAL TO A TOUCH AND GO. DURING DEPARTURE AT ABOUT 200-300 AGL THE ENGINE BACKFIRED AND SURGED AND THEN LOST POWER. HE ELECTED TO LAND IN THE GRASSY RUNWAY OVERRUN AREA OF 32R.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
