(-23) ON JUNE 20, 2004, MR. SCHAAB, PILOT-IN-COMMAND OF N4685A, A CESSNA CE-180 ON WHEELS, WAS LANDING ON RUNWAY 24 AT THE MERRILL FIELD AIRPORT HERE IN ANCHORAGE, ALASKA. JUST AFTER TOUCHDOWN, WITH A WIND OF ABOUT 280 DEGREES AT ABOUT 8 KNTS; ABOUT A 40 DEGREE CROSSWIND, HE SWERVED TO THE RIGHT WHILE RETRACTING THE FLAPS AND BRINGING THE TAIL DOWN ON THE RUNWAY TO COMPLETE HIS LANDING. THE RESULTING SWERVER TO THE RIGHT WAS ENOUGH, THOUGH HE ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT, TO CAUSE THE AIRCRAFT TO GROUNDLOOP, WHICH RESULTED IN THE LEFT WINGTIP AND LEFT HORIZONTAL STABILIZER TO STIKE THE RUNWAY, SUSTAINING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AND COMING TO REST UP ON ITS NOSE WITH ALSO DAMAGE TO THE PROP AND SPINNER. THE SOLE OTHER OCCUPANT WAS HIS WIFE. NEITHER HE OR HIS WIFE WERE INJURED.
