## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JULY 14, 2004, AIRCRAFT DEPARTED SMO. AT APPROX. 10 MILES NORTH OF THE AIRPORT AND AN ALTITUDE OF 2500 FEET, PILOT/OWNER HEARD A "POP". THE PILOT SCANNED THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND NOTICED ZERO OIL PRESSURE. AT THAT TIME THE PILOT TURNED AROUND AND RETURNED TO SMO AND DECLARED AN EMERGENCY. THE PILOT DECIDED TO MAINTAIN ENGINE POWER UNTIL HE FELT HE HAD THE AIRPORT MADE. THE ENGINE NOISES GOT LOUDER AND THE ENGINE WAS SHUT DOWN. THE PILOT MADE A DOWNWIND LANDING ON RUNWAY 3 AND COASTED OFF THE ACTIVE RUNWAY TO A LOCAL FBO. REVIEW OF THE RECORDS FOUND THAT THE ENGINE WAS A TELEDYNE-CONTINENTAL OVERHAUL WITH 64.0 HOURS TOTAL TIME IN SERVICE. ON AUGUST 10, 2004, TH ENGINE WAS TORN DOWN AT TELEDYNE CONTINENTAL. THE RESULTS OF THE TEARDOWN SHOWED THAT A STOP PIN IN ONE OF THE MAGNETOS HAD FALLEN OUT AND SHEARED THE OIL PUMP SHAFT CAUSING THE LACK OF OIL PRESSURE. FAA MIDO LOCATED IN ALA. WAS ONSITE FOR THE TEARDOWN. THIS FAILURE HAS CAUSED A REVIEW OF ALL THE MAGNETOS AND WAS DOCUMENTED ON A MALFUNCTION DEFECT REPORT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
