## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JULY 18, 2004 AT APPROXIMATELY 0720 HOT AIR BALLOON, REGISTRATION N6036F, IMPACTED THE POWER LINES ADJACENT THE WEST EXCHANGE PARKWAY IN ALLEN TEXAS CAUSING NUMEROUS HOLE IN ENVELOPE. THE PILOT AND TWO PASSENGERS EVACUATED BALLOON AFTER INITIAL IMPACT WITH POWER LINES. TWO FAA AVIATION SAFETY INSPECTORS WITNESSED INCIDNENT IN VEHICLE APPROXIMATELY 40 YARDS FROM IMPACT. PASSENGERS AND PILOT STATED THAT THE BALLOON HAD MADE A SAFE LANDING IN FIELD BUT PILOT ELECTED TO MOVE IT CLOSER TO ROAD. DURING REPOSITIONING THE PILOT LOST CONTROL AND AIRCRAFT IMPACTED WIRES CAUSING NUMEROUS SPARKS AND MELTING/BURNING OF ENVELOPE. PASSENGERS STATED THAT PILOT JUMPED OUT OF BASKET PRIOR TO THEM. PILOT STATED THAT HE WAS AT FAULT, HE UNDERESTIMATED THE WINDS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW04CA234](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW04CA234), Jul 18, 2004: Lindstrand Balloons 90A (N6036F), Allen, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance with the power lines. A contributing factor was the gusty wind conditions.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
