## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT WAS CONDUCTING AN INITIAL TEST FLIGHT AND HAD COMPLETED TEN TAKE-OFFS AND LANDINGS ON RUNWAY 33. JUST AFTER TURNING DOWNWIND FROM CROSSWIND FOLLOWING THE ELEVENTH TAKE-OFF, THE ENGINE POWER DROPPED TO LESS THAN HALF. UNABLE TO MAINTAIN PATTERN ALTITUDE, THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO LAND ON CLOSED RUNWAY 09. THE PILOT WAS FORCED TO LAND THE AIRPLANE IN A FIELD APPROXIMATELY 200 FEET SHORT OF THE RUNWAY. THE IMPACT WITH THE TERRAIN DISPLACED THE LEFT WING AFT, COLLAPSED THE NOSE LANDING GEAR ASSEMBLY, AND BUCKLED THE FIREWALL.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DEN04LA108](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DEN04LA108), Jul 21, 2004: Davis-Zenair Stol CH 801 (N10627), Erie, CO, substantial damage. Probable cause: impact with terrain during a forced landing following a loss of engine power for underdetermined reasons. A contributing factor was the lack of suitable terrain for a forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
